Seeing the latest reports on the tsunami sea waves which struck Thailand, India and Shri Lanka. Poses a question, can the same thing happen in the Black Sea ?
As you all know their have been no reports of freak waves in the region since Nessie went for a paddle in the Black Sea. But Black Sea tsunamis are not uncommon. Up to now, there have been 3 tsunamis reported along the Black Sea coasts of Turkey. These was the Black Sea Tsunami of 1598, the Fatsa Tsunami of 1939 and the Amasra Tsunami of 1968 (Altinok and Ersoy,1998). 20 have been observed in other parts of the region.
See www.balkangeophysoc.org/menu/ congresses/oral/46-47-O8-1-Yildiz_Altinok.PDF for info.
Naturally Turkey is notorious for earthquakes, the last big one striking Izmit in north west Turkey, 5 years ago, measuring 7.4 on the Richter scale.
So lets not get complacent. Naturally it would be interesting to see if Ukraine has any early warning system for tsunamis and whether residents along the Crimean coast take any basic precautions.
